Boogiepop Phantom is an anime series that is part of the "Boogiepop wa Warawanai" (Boogiepop Never Laughs) series. It began as a novel series by Kouhei Kadono, with beautiful CG illustrations by Kouji Ogata (Boogiepop and Others: The Art of Kouji Ogata Artbook). The series was made into a 12-episode anime after winning the 4th Dengeki Game Novel contest, along with a live-action movie called "Boogiepop and Others" and four graphic novels, Boogiepop wa Warawanai (two volumes) and Boogiepop Dual: Maikenu-tachi no Saakasu (Losers' Circus) (also two volumes, but illustrated by Takano Masayuki).
Boogiepop Phantom is made up of 12 episodes, each one chronicling a different character or set of characters. The series is in a nonlinear style; it is told in both the present and the memory of the past of different characters. The main events that each character have in common are the serial murders from years ago, the mysterious light explosion, and the present, where gossip about the shinigami (god of death), Boogiepop, is whispered left and right.
"The past easily attracts the present... caused by the pains of old memories."
